Demographics
Excelsior is a tabloid-size newspaper published by Encore Publishing Group for the Kalamazoo Public Schools. It was first available in 1998 with the goal of improving communications with residents of the school district.
Every month (except July) Excelsior is mailed to each of the more than 51,000 active residential postal customers in the Kalamazoo Public School District. An additional 1,000 copies are provided to local real estate offices for distribution to new residents and homebuyers.
Analysis of the readership of Excelsior:
With regard to age, the readership is well distributed among the adult population, with the largest single group in the range of 30-44 years old.
Readers tend to be well educated, with over 70% having some college education. Readers of Excelsior come mostly from the middle and upper-middle income brackets, with 25% having an annual income of more than $50,000. In a 1998 survey done for KPS, Excelsior rated higher than any other media source for the district in terms of reliability of information provided. Among African-Americans, it was the number one source of reliable information.
